ADHD – An Executive Functioning Disorder

Tantrums and defiance are not always behavioural issues. Think before labelling the child as ill-mannered, it could also be due to attention deficit hyperactive disorder(ADHD). Children with ADHD find it very difficult to sit in one place and get involved in activities that require sustained attention.

ADHD has always been considered a cognitive functioning disorder but the problem lies in initiation and motivation, self-monitoring, cognitive flexibility, impulse control, and procrastination, ADHD children know what to do, but they do not do what they know, they have problems in organizing, planning and prioritizing the task which indicates that it is also an executive functioning disorder and the treatment should also be focused on building.
